Benefits of Swimming

Are you looking for a form of exercise that is fun, effective and won’t make you sweat? Why not try swimming! Whether you are looking to lose weight, maintain fitness or simply blow off some steam, going for a swim is one of the best forms of exercise out there and can be done by almost everyone!

So why is swimming so great? Why should you have to put up with getting changed, getting wet and getting changed again?

Of course you could go jogging (which is another effective way to exercise), but swimming also has a great deal of benefits for anyone willing to give it a go!

Anyone can do it!

One of the best things about swimming is that people of all levels of ability can have a go! Because you’re in water, your body weight is reduced by up to 90%, meaning that anyone who is heavier or has limited ability can still get in the pool for some activity. This is what also makes it a popular method for physical rehabilitation. Land-based activities such as sports and jogging definitely have their place in the exercise world but can have high levels of impact on your joints and muscles. As you’re almost weightless in water, the impact whilst swimming is next to nothing.

It moves your whole body

When you are in the pool, you will be using pretty much every muscle in your body to keep yourself afloat and propel yourself along. Even if you are stationary, your arms and legs will be constantly moving which gives your cardiovascular system (heart and lungs) a good, gentle workout. You can also tailor which parts of your body you want to focus on – different techniques such as the breaststroke, backstroke or butterfly for instance will work on some parts of your body more than others.

Brilliant for weight loss

As swimming moves your body so much, it is absolutely brilliant for weight loss. If simply keeping yourself afloat is burning calories, imagine what you can achieve by pulling and pushing yourself through the water for half an hour. There’s also the psychological aspect to consider – because swimming doesn’t make you sweat and has a low impact on your joints it really doesn’t feel like such hard work.

Of course, swimming is also great fun and can be very therapeutic. Floating around in the water is more enjoyable than it has any right to be and if you have kids, taking them out for a splash shouldn’t take too much persuasion!
