If you are exercising or are considering putting together a routine, the foods you eat beforehand can have a large effect on the overall efficiency of your workout.
Have you sometimes suddenly found your effort levels drop half way through a job on the treadmill, or you just don’t have it in you for one more set on the weights? Chances are you have not eaten enough of the right foods before your workout, giving you the energy to power on through your exercise session and come out feeling great.
Eating a nutritious meal before changing into your gym shorts has three advantages: It helps prevent low blood sugar (which can lead to dizziness and fatigue), settles your stomach to avoid any acidic refluxes and most important fuels your muscles to get the best workout possible. Of course, don’t start eating bananas and protein bars directly before your workout; try to eat about an hour before to avoid feeling full and lethargic.
So what exactly are the best foods to eat before a workout?
Get those carbs!
Carbs are one of the most important part of anyone’s diet, especially if they are going to hit the gym or play some sports. They are the body’s primary source of energy that is used to fuel the muscles and keep up energy levels. If you are on an exercise routine and experience low energy during your workout, you may not be getting enough carbohydrates. So what are some of those ‘good’ carbs you can eat before a workout:
- Wholegrain rice or pastas with some protein or vegetable.
- Cereals (avoiding the super-sugary ones).
- Fruits are a great way to get natural sugars into your bloodstream, especially bananas as they release energy slowly (and come in handy bunches!)
Proteins contain essential amino acids that are a very important part of any pre-workout diet as they can contribute towards muscle gain and recovery. Some people prefer to eat proteins after a workout to help their muscles repair, and while this is definitely a good move, eating them beforehand can also prove beneficial to growing muscle mass. Some people may prefer to eat protein bars and shakes, whilst others simply eat foods that simply have them naturally such as:
- Trail mix
- Peanut butter
Whatever your exercise, eating foods high in quality carbohydrates and proteins is the best way to get the most out of your workout and energised.
